Eight Great Tips For Moving Up The Stairs

Maybe you found that wonderful, bright apartment with the big windows...four floors up. Or perhaps it's an apartment in a converted old mansion, up a long flight of stairs. Maybe it's the staircase in your own home. One way or another, it's likely that, at some point in your life, you will have to move your valuables up a flight or two of stairs, and that can involve everything from boxes to furniture.

It's a task that can be intimidating, but we're here to help. Here are some tips to make the job easier.

  • Personnel- make sure that you have enough people for the job. Even if you don't have really heavy furniture, remember that you'll have to get up and down those stairs several times, adding to the effort you'll have to expend - and the energy you'll need.
  • Equipment- what kind of furniture and appliances do you have? Dollies, hand trucks and stairclimbers can do most of the heavy lifting for you - literally. Don't assume that a bunch of burly friends will do the job when you can make it so much easier.
  • Gloves- spare your hands as much as you can by wearing a good pair of work gloves. Sturdy gardening gloves can also do the trick in a pinch- anything that is non-slip and provides some level of protection for your hands.
  • Wrap it up - wrap the corners of furniture with plastic sheeting. As you walk up the stairs, you're bound to hit the wall now and then; this will protect both wall and furniture. Placing moving blankets around pieces first, then wrapping, provides an extra layer of protection.
  • Clear the path - make the trip to your final destination first to make sure the way is cleared and as unobstructed as possible.
  • Heaviest first - do yourself a favour and move the heaviest items first, when you and your helpers are fresh and before any fatigue sets in.
  • Strongest on the bottom - the person on the lower end of a piece of furniture is carrying more weight, so be sure that it's the strongest person too.
  • Take it apart - take apart any furniture piece that you can, including legs and drawers. Taking off cushions and anything else that can come off will also help to reduce bulk and weight.
