Eight Items To Pack Last

When you’re planning your move, at the beginning, the task seems impossibly large. There are so many individual items to pack, you want to just have a massive yard sale, get rid of it all and then start fresh in your new home. It’s a nice fantasy, but for most of us, it’s not practical. The good news is, with a little thought, and some time, you can organize that massive mountain of packing into a bunch of smaller, doable tasks.

Separating your possessions into different categories will help you figure out ways to space the packing over the weeks before your move, leaving you to concentrate on moving when the big day comes. Here’s a look at some of the items you should set aside and leave until the very last.

  1. Documents – this includes your most important documents such as any lease or mortgage documents, IDs, utility information, and other vital paperwork. Be sure to include your address book.

  2. Medicines & everyday toiletries – these you should be keeping separate for the whole move in a case or box that is with you at all times.

  3. Batteries, chargers, cords for portable entertainment – this is especially true if you have children. You don’t want to move in and then have to search through boxes to find a way to relax and unwind after the move. Staring at the walls isn’t an option!

  4. Basic cleaning supplies – these can prove just as handy for cleaning up your old place as they will for sprucing up your new one. Be sure to include paper towels or cleaning cloths.

  5. Bedding – keep enough for the first night on hand. That way, you can get a decent night’s sleep in comfort.

  6. Pet supplies – food and medicines for your furry friends, just as you will have them handy for the rest of the family.

  7. Basic tools – a box cutter or multi-purpose knife, screwdriver, tape, scissors, flashlight, a hammer and a couple of nails – basic tools that may come in handy at any time.

  8. Basic utensils – a can opener, plastic plates and cutlery for that first night.

The idea is, you don’t want to move in and have to immediately unpack...anything. Having the basics handy and then keeping them with you in the car, or easily accessible in the truck, means that you can finish moving, and then stop to take a breath and congratulate yourself on your successful DIY move before tackling those stacks of plastic moving boxes full of your possessions.
