Moving Hacks: Protecting Your Upholstered Furniture

Whether you move in winter or summer, good weather or bad weather, your upholstered furniture is at risk. The dangers are many, and lurk around every corner that you negotiate down a hallway, and every bump in the truck along the way.

  • Rips from abrasion and friction against the truck, walls or other items;

  • Water damage from rain or snow;

  • Dust, dirt and stains.

What to do? It’s not like you can pack your sofa and armchairs in a convenient plastic moving box – or any kind of box. But, there are some simple steps you can take to make sure your upholstered furniture arrives in your new home in the best condition.

Protection is the key.

Fabric protection.

  • Scotchgard or similar products that can be sprayed onto the fabric can be your first step.

  • Spray the whole upholstered area evenly, taking care to follow the manufacturer’s directions and avoid over application.

Cushion the blow.

  • Furniture pads or moving blankets are made to be soft and cushion large pieces against blows.

  • Get enough to wrap up the whole piece of furniture, using tape to secure the piece.

  • Cover any wood pieces, like legs or armrests, along with the upholstered portions.

If the piece is antique or requires extra protection, you can use the layering method.

  • Begin with a layer of micro foam, which you can buy in sheets. Cover the whole piece and tape it securely.

  • Next, add a layer of paper padding, taping that layer just as securely.

  • The last layer is shrink wrapping the whole piece, with tape as usual. You don’t want to use the plastic shrink wrapping against the sofa directly as it can cause condensation build up inside.

Tape or straps?

  • When taping any material in place around a large piece of furniture, the best method is to stand the sofa on its end and then wrap the tape all the way around.

  • Ratchet straps and be an alternative, or an extra method of securing material around the whole piece. Ratchet straps are made of heavy duty rubberized material with a hook and ratchet closure – similar idea to a bungee cord but sturdier.
