Small Business Moving Checklist

Moving your small business or professional practice is an important step, and one that can seem intimidating in scope. But, with some planning and forethought, it can be done efficiently and relatively headache free.

When you own a small business, it’s not just the physical moving that you need to worry about. There are a number of other considerations you have to take into account. Here’s a good checklist to get you started.

1. Leave yourself enough time for all the details – begin planning at least 90 days in advance if possible. Taking the big job of movingand breaking it into smaller steps turns a mountain into a series of achievable goals. Set out your time frame and schedule your tasks accordingly.

2. Break down the tasks into logical groups, and then assign them to different members of your team. Keep all the lines of communications open and be sure everyone is up-to-date on the plans and progress. If you are a one-person operation, such as a professional practice, or only have a minimal number of employees, then you want to be careful to allow enough time.

3. When it comes to the physical side of moving, the first step should be to take an inventory of what you have, and then plan your resources accordingly. Be sure to order enough reusable plastic moving boxes and other equipment that you need well ahead of time.

4. Tell your customers. Even if you have a virtual business, people should be aware of the move. Take it as an excuse to contact your customer list and let them know about your growth. Some businesses turn it into a creative opportunity to send newsletters, make videos and more.

5. Will you need to look for new vendors or will existing vendors still be convenient in your new location? Delivery days, courier pick-ups, and other details need to be worked out.

5. Remember to change your website and any online profiles such as Linkedin or social media. Again, even if your only customer contact is digital, it is a way of communicating with your client base. On your website, you can highlight the new address to draw attention to it.

6. Make arrangements for services and communications infrastructure as early as you can, preferably at least 60 days in advance. Make sure that you have the same kind of infrastructure at your new location before you sign the lease – don’t assume. If you have to change phone numbers, set up call forwarding from the old number.

7. Make a plan of the new office or location, and draw in where everything will be placed.

8. Move over the weekend, or whenever your off hours may be. Off-peak days, evening and night moves are a possibility if weekends don’t work. The goal is to minimize disruption to your operations.

Start with a plan, and this checklist, and you’ll be well on your way to working your way to a successful move.
